Round Table Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS)
Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) represents an essential decarbonization solution for achieving climate neutrality targets. European institutions have cultivated a keen awareness of the pivotal role played by CCS. Following the 2009 Directive on the geological storage of CO2, CCS has progressively ascended in significance within both EU and national institutions since 2019. The Net-Zero Industry Act of March 2023 identifies such technologies as one of the strategic levers in increasing EU and hard-to-abate sectors’ industrial competitiveness, with an annual injection capacity target of at least 50 million tonnes of CO2 to be achieved by 2030 .
Given the current scenario, it is therefore necessary to identify the factors that allow for the acceleration of investments to make this technology available and accessible to European hard-to-abate industries that are actively shaping their decarbonization strategies.
The Round Table, scheduled for Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, from 10:00 to 13:00 in Brussels, aims to facilitate active dialogue among policy makers and top executives from European institutions, hard-to-abate industries, and trade associations. This event will be an opportunity to discuss the critical pathways to enable private investments and accelerate the creation of a full-stack CCS value chain. In particular, the meeting will have a strategic focus on the Southern European regions and Mediterranean countries.
The Round Table will feature the presentation of the "Zero Carbon Technology Roadmap" Strategic Study, conducted by The European House - Ambrosetti on behalf of Eni and Snam.
The Strategic Study scientifically demonstrates that CCS is a mature, safe, and competitive technology that can already be deployed to tackle the decarbonization challenge while maintaining the economic competitiveness of industrial activities. The Study also outlines a set of recommendations for institutions to establish a robust regulatory framework to assist in the development and initiation phases of CCS supply chain deployment.
By bringing together the main EU stakeholders, the Round Table seeks to fuel a debate with the purpose of advancing the adoption of CCS technologies in Europe through collaborative synergy between institutional and industrial sectors.
