Robotics and automation: transformative paradigms and models for Italian SMEs

Robotics Tech Center Via Dell'Industria, 18 - 20010 VITTUONE

Industrial robotics is one of the technologies most intuitively associated with smart manufacturing, with deployment now pervasive and steadily accelerating. The number of industrial robotic units worldwide has grown from just over one million in 2010 to nearly three million in 2020, with the number of applications steadily increasing.
It is not only the quantity of robots that is growing, but also the potential for automation. The difference from traditional industrial lines, consisting of machines specialized on a single task placed in sequence, is remarkable: production flows can now be managed by multitasking machines, capable of operating autonomously on different products and processes. In doing so, the advent of Artificial Intelligence will enable the scope of activities subject to automation to be broadly expanded: not just routine tasks, but increasingly value-added activities in which algorithms will be able to learn from human activities and collaborate with people.
The importance of this issue for Italy is inherent in its manufacturing vocation. It is therefore crucial to act on business productivity as a lever of competitiveness, encouraging increasing levels of automation; but not only that, the spread of industrial robots is already proving to be a powerful ally in pursuing increasing levels of sustainability.
What are the opportunities for Italian Small and Medium Enterprises? What is the relationship between automation and digital transformation? What are the barriers to entry for these technologies and what are the models for overcoming them? What are the best practices for change management?
