PHYGITAL MEETING
Energy transition in transport: how to do it without destroying value, focus on hydrogen

NH Collection Santo Stefano Via Porta Palatina, 19 - 10122 TORINO

Achieving the decarbonisation targets set by the Paris agreements requires a real energy transition. It is essential that the transition is promoted without technological bias (technological neutrality) and that it is done by producing value and not simply by adopting technologies developed elsewhere, particularly in the transport sector.
Hydrogen can be the molecule that will help us meet this challenge, helping to solve the triple energy paradox: clean, safe and competitive energy. Institutional estimates show that by 2030 around 28% of consumption could be enabled by this vector.
In fact, it is now recognised that hydrogen is an enabling factor in the transition to a carbon-free economy and all the world's most advanced countries have already defined a national strategy for its development.
Hydrogen can be a key to industrial reconversion for the competitiveness of the European automotive industry, which has to face the slow but inexorable banning of traditional engines.
If it takes this path, Italy will be able to consolidate an industrial supply chain associated with the development of hydrogen, with significant spin-offs of between EUR 64 and 111 billion in production value by 2050. All this depends on the costs of the H2 raw material and the efficiency of all the steps of the value chain: from production to final consumption via distribution. This is why it is important to look in detail at the available solutions, their costs and efficiency.
Moreover, in order to seize these important environmental and industrial opportunities, the development of hydrogen and its industrial chain must be supported by a clear strategic vision and a medium to long term road map of action involving institutions and companies.
