Sustainable biofuels as a strategic lever for industrial competitiveness, energy security and decarbonization
At a time of growing attention toward European industrial competitiveness, energy security and the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors, sustainable biofuels represent a scalable and technologically mature solution, already available at industrial scale.
Against this backdrop, building on a collaboration initiated in 2022 to promote the principle of technological neutrality in European and national climate, energy and industrial policies, TEHA Group and Eni have launched a new joint initiative. It is designed to accelerate the deployment of biofuels from renewable feedstocks by bringing together institutions, industry and end users within a high-level platform built around a shared strategic vision. The initiative has so far convened five thematic Working Groups with nearly 70 leading stakeholders from academia, the scientific community and industry. The main outcomes were integrated into the “Sustainable biofuels as a strategic lever for industrial competitiveness, energy security and decarbonization” Strategic Study, conducted by TEHA.
The Round Table, scheduled for November 18, will convene distinguished representatives of European institutions and industry to foster a structured high-level discussion on the scale-up of sustainable biofuels in Europe and their contribution to the continent's industrial future.
The event will feature the presentation of the Strategic Study, which shows that sustainable biofuels, as a complement to other energy carriers, offer an immediate means to reduce emissions in the sectors most difficult to electrify, such as aviation, maritime and heavy-duty transport. They also enable a significant diversification of supply sources.
On this basis, the Study outlines a set of recommendations for institutions, with a view to fostering an increasingly pragmatic approach. These include assessing emissions across the entire value chain, supporting the transformation of existing refineries into biorefineries to safeguard Europe's industrial base, and verifying the sustainability of biofuels through real data and traceability, in synergy with food production.
